MOH Clinical Practice Guidelines (Autism): AMTS responds to the call for evidence in Music Therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

AMTS prepared a detailed response to the team that came up with the Clinical Practice Guidelines in March 2010. The response drew on data gleaned from an extensive review of music therapy literature.

Dear Dr. Lim and the CPG team,
As professional representatives of the Association for Music Therapy, Singapore, AMTS, we are responding to the recently published MOH Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG)1 for Autistic Spectrum Disorders(ASD) in Pre-school Children. In the CPG, music therapy was not recommended in the “routine management of children with ASD because of inconclusive evidence (p. 71). We would like to clarify points made in the CPG, specifically in the order they were made and drawing from current music therapy research to support music therapy as a viable adjunctive treatment modality for individuals with ASD…

Paying tribute to Dr. Clive Robbins

The much-loved co-founder of Nordoff-Robbins Creative Music Therapy, Dr. Clive Robbins, made his transition this morning. Dr. Robbins came to Singapore in April 2010 and was the star highlight of our inaugural Music Therapy Day (photo above). Thank you, Clive, for your encouragement and generosity, and most importantly, for believing in us. We are truly blessed to have been in your company.

For now, please consider overseas training, while we continue to make something happen in Singapore, hopefully soon… In the meantime, SGH conducts 1-day MT seminars to give an overview of the world of MT. COURSE BRIEF:

This 8 week course will be an overview of how music can be used with
children with special needs. This is an experiential course targeted
at allied health professionals (OTs, SLTs, PTs, etc), early childhood
educators and special education teachers, who work with children
with special needs, and who are interested in using music in their
work. Participants need to have some music background as they will
be expected to lead music activities. It is highly recommended that
participants will accompany themselves using a chosen instrument
during the course. Participants will make a presentation to demonstrate
learning in the last week.

The workshop will not train participants to become music therapists or
to practice music therapy, though it will briefly introduce what music
therapy entails. The focus will be on theoretical underpinnings relevant
to early childhood music education and development, with focus on
Autism Spectrum Disorder and hearing impairment, as well as a brief
look at selected syndromes. Participants are encouraged to test out
their ideas and try new activities in this new learning environment.

The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) Council has just announced an updated WFMT definition of music therapy. This new definition encapsulates a global perspective of contemporary music therapy in a comprehensive and concise way that matches WFMT’s goals. “Music therapy is the professional use of music and its elements as an intervention in medical, educational, and everyday environments with individuals, groups, families, or communities who seek to optimize their quality of life and improve their physical, social, communicative, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health and wellbeing. Research, practice, education, and clinical training in music therapy are based on professional standards according to cultural, social, and political contexts” (WFMT, 2011).
